Nicola Burt-Skinner is a successful and entertaining Coworkers who attends our Darlington Coworking days. It was great to find out more about Nicola and her fantastic business The Wellness Academy for Working Women.
TELL US ALL ABOUT THE WELLNESS ACADEMY…..
The Wellness Academy for Working Women is an online membership area where women can learn to take care of themselves and their business. The Academy offers advice and information on anything from finding your purpose to how to build a WordPress website. Members also get to ask me how to do anything via email and get a personal response – including a video, where necessary. Want to know what herbs or crystals to carry into a meeting to help you focus? I’ve got you covered. How to link Mailchimp and your blog? Yep, that’s in there too.
In 2016, I came to realise – as a burnt out Virtual Assistant – that self-employed people cannot separate their personal and business lives. Like ying and yang, there is a little bit of each in the other and negative influences on one can negatively impact on the other. Ever been annoyed with a client and took it out on your family at dinner time? Yep, we’ve all been there but with the help of courses in the Wellness Academy, I can help you find the tools and techniques to stop that and other stresses from happening. I also offer 1:2:1 coaching for those that need it.
SO WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO WORK FOR YOURSELF?
I worked for a FTSE500 company running the admin team and loved every minute of it but after marrying the boss (so cliched, I know) I left in 2009 to be a lady of leisure and spend time with my young daughter. After a few months I was totally bored, especially as my daughter was at school full time, so I looked into self-employment and discovered that there was such a thing as a Virtual Assistant.
I put my admin skills to good use and set up NBS Admin Assist, offering general admin support – email & diary management – to time poor business owners. I then taught myself web design and later rebranded to FitBizPA, focussing on helping fitness business owners to automate their processes and get their business online.
I then learnt that doing what you’re good at and what you love are often two separate things. What I really loved was actually helping business owners get an end result; to solve the problems they were facing.
After a bout of ill-health in 2016, I took some time off, qualified in a number of holistic therapies and – not wanting to let my technical talents go to waste – the Wellness Academy was born..
WHAT ARE YOUR BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENTS SO FAR?
I am immensely proud that I have been able to build a business based on what I love, that fits around my life AND keeps me in shoes and handbags!
I am blessed to have been able to help people achieve their dreams, whether that’s by getting them through their technical difficulties or helping them find their purpose and achieve their goals. I am always happy to help!
Making the shortlist for the 2014 Blog Awards final (Technical Category) was a big achievement too.
TELL US THREE THINGS YOU’RE PLEASED YOU’VE LEARNT SINCE YOU STARTED OUT IN BUSINESS?
1) Surrounding yourself with like minded people is the quickest way to success
2) Asking for help is not a weakness (quite the opposite actually)
3) To avoid burn out, love what you do and above all, be yourself.
HOW HAVE COWORKING DAYS HELPED YOU AND YOUR BUSINESS?
Co-working is a life-saver when you are self-employed. It’s great to be able to get the same interaction you would get if you had “a proper job”. A day full of “water cooler” moments and sane adult conversations (sometimes), makes a huge change from working in my pyjamas with Homes under the Hammer on in the background.
It gives me a day to focus solely on my business and get sh*t done. I go in with a to-do list and come out with a “done” list and new contacts. Highly recommended.
THANK YOU, NICOLA!
